This project was done in fulfillment of the Professional Engagement class. For this project, I chose to work with the children's ministry at Murray First United Methodist Church. The actual name of the ministry is United Methodist Kid's, otherwise known as UMK. I will more than likely refer to this ministry as FUMC's Children's Church, or UMK's Music Ministry (even though it's technically not a music ministry by itself). This project isn't really something I came up with myself, UMK has actually been around for about ten years or so.
I found out about this ministry a few years ago when I was in need of some volunteer hours for a Youth Nonprofit Leadership class. During that semester I contacted the director of UMK and quickly began to help out. After that class I continued to volunteer every once and a while with UMK. Upon starting Professional Engagement, I had to brainstorm ideas for a project, and remembered that UMK had a portion of time during every meeting that they sang songs in preparation for performances in front of the church congregation. I once again contacted the director and got the okay to come back and volunteer/lead the group.
I started this project back in August, and completed it the Sunday before Thanksgiving. I was able to help out with this group of children every Sunday and Wednesday evening; teaching and leading them in music, in order to prepare them for the Thanksgiving performance, Thankful, which was performed for the congregation. I collaborated with their full time music leader in making power points of the lyrics, coming up with motions to the songs, thinking of creative ways to teach them the songs, and putting the program together.
This project was right up my alley because I've always wanted to lead children in music of some form, but especially in a church setting. One of my dreams and goals in life is to become a worship or music leader in a church, whether it be leading children, youth, or adults.
